Is that bad?<br />
<br />
Before you think that this fabric is too loud, remember that most older women look great in jewel colors and my Mom's no exception. On the other hand, pastel colors can wash out your complexion and make you look tired.<br />
<br />
Anyway, what finally got the ball rolling is I had this butterfly sequin fabric, and I thought how fabulous it would look on a purse with this aqua tie dye fabric. I wanted to show off the butterfly and what better way than to put it on the purse flap? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6gfL1fgM7ds/VAecH64M7GI/AAAAAAAACUA/3cWYoOc9x0o/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6gfL1fgM7ds/VAecH64M7GI/AAAAAAAACUA/3cWYoOc9x0o/s1600/Slide2.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I made this bag with the pattern for my large <a href="https://www.etsy.com/search?q=caroljoyfashions52&ship_to=ZZ" target="_blank">Princess Purse line in my Bridal Evening Bag Shop on Etsy</a>. I love that the fabric around the butterfly had enough contrast, otherwise, it would've been too matchy-matchy with the main fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--m18oaL6e38/VAecDw0UHlI/AAAAAAAACT0/1xhUvCtbJsM/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--m18oaL6e38/VAecDw0UHlI/AAAAAAAACT0/1xhUvCtbJsM/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
After I made the purse, I was finally excited about making the dress. Yes, that's how I work, backwards. I used Simplicity 3744 and I made view D, which is on the far left, the black and white dress. <br />
<br />
<img alt="Simplicity Threads dress 3744" src="http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/3744/3744.jpg" /><br />
<br />
I thought this pattern was a good choice because I loved the details on the dress (the belt in back, sleeves, neckline, etc.) and this aqua tie dye fabric irons with a sharp crease, perfect! <br />
<br />
My only concern about the pattern was that the pocket sits across the entire stomach and I thought it would add too much bulk. So I made sure to use very thin, matching aqua fabric for the pocket insides. Otherwise, I thought the pockets were a cute touch. Plus, I had some shell buttons that went with the aqua perfectly and look cute on the pocket front. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t3_eqlkwRj4/VAeeLzAezvI/AAAAAAAACUQ/PvAuO89n7-E/s1600/Slide7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t3_eqlkwRj4/VAeeLzAezvI/AAAAAAAACUQ/PvAuO89n7-E/s1600/Slide7.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I like the neck because of that sharp crease from the fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OyKIa6exn58/VAeeyqEqSII/AAAAAAAACUY/GhsLH5YLQAo/s1600/Slide6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OyKIa6exn58/VAeeyqEqSII/AAAAAAAACUY/GhsLH5YLQAo/s1600/Slide6.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You have the same crease and V shape on the bottom of the sleeve too. And the matching button decoration. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ZLb7e-II9U/VAefQIynFhI/AAAAAAAACUg/KkCfQ5THgRM/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ZLb7e-II9U/VAefQIynFhI/AAAAAAAACUg/KkCfQ5THgRM/s1600/Slide4.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When you have details like this, by the way, they show up best on a plain, one color fabric like this aqua. Otherwise, if the fabric is too busy, you wouldn't be able to notice the pocket or sleeves, etc. and your hard work was for naught!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lh35ATvpQ6Y/VAefggodB1I/AAAAAAAACUo/_pKqr6Jqoc0/s1600/Slide8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lh35ATvpQ6Y/VAefggodB1I/AAAAAAAACUo/_pKqr6Jqoc0/s1600/Slide8.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I think the band across the back is cute with the button decoration. You wouldn't be able to see that with a busy fabric either.<br />
<br />
Well, here's the finished dress and bag! My Mom is going to look fantastic!!! <br />

<br />
About 34-35 years ago (wow!) I made her a quilt before she went to college. Well, she just mailed me the best present in the world! She literally took apart the old quilt and resewed it into another quilt with new backing and stitches throughout to make it usable once again. What a great gift! isn't it beautiful?!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B7JfcrBCfqM/U8bnGPW-DlI/AAAAAAAACM0/kH4MatzP35o/s1600/1+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B7JfcrBCfqM/U8bnGPW-DlI/AAAAAAAACM0/kH4MatzP35o/s1600/1+003.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I thought I would show you closeups of some of the fabric squares I remember--some of these fabric pieces make me think of the garments we made out of them, like cheesy summer shorts, Easter dresses or pants.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TwL0qV1Ta0g/U8bn23i9nvI/AAAAAAAACM8/tvNTa_lm0Lk/s1600/1+041.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TwL0qV1Ta0g/U8bn23i9nvI/AAAAAAAACM8/tvNTa_lm0Lk/s1600/1+041.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I remember Easter dresses made of this purple flower heart fabric. For several years my Grandma made them for the girls in my family, when she came to visit us from Michigan to Florida. All of us 6 girls got a dress, but with slight variations. Someone would have white ric rac on the hem, or different sleeves or neckline. We were adorable!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
My mom had a pair of shorts made of this blue red fabric. Hmmmm.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SCOZTrBRMO4/U8cEWclMKwI/AAAAAAAACNY/BgbxGBtrRyY/s1600/Anchors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SCOZTrBRMO4/U8cEWclMKwI/AAAAAAAACNY/BgbxGBtrRyY/s1600/Anchors.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I would love to make a purse out of this fabric! I remember some sort of summer short set made of this--but I don't think I wore it...<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
I remember this butterfly fabric! I wanted to make a dress out of it but there wasn't enough so I settled on putting it in the quilt.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
This is the new backing fabric my sister used. See all the swirly type stitches she did? Really cool!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
So, I want to give a public shout out to my sweet sister and tell her how much I love and appreciate her kind, thoughtful gift!<br />
<br />
Love you, sis!<br />

I've bought some really pretty <a href="http://caroljoyfashions.blogspot.com/2014/02/metallics-microsuede-fabrics-in-my-stash.html" target="_blank">metallic fabrics </a>over the past few months, and have been tooling away, coming up with styles.<br />
<br />
I love this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/search?q=caroljoyfashions%20metallic%20fur&ship_to=ZZ" target="_blank">faux fur and metallic print combination</a>--I made sure the make the fur flap shorter so that the metallic peaks through--<br />

Of course, you'll have a choice of 4 furs, and but really, if you see another fur that I have better, just let me know. I can't wait to make these purses in different combinations, especially the blood red and black faux fur. Talk about dramatic!</div>

For the last few months I've been thinking about a book I had put together when I was 10 or 11 years old (about 40 years ago). I had done a lot of shredding of my old stuff about a year ago and thought for sure I had shredded the book too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VB_1ihq3sZk/U1wejVSJOXI/AAAAAAAACKI/n0ruqgfyA0g/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VB_1ihq3sZk/U1wejVSJOXI/AAAAAAAACKI/n0ruqgfyA0g/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I couldn't stop thinking about that darn book. I was laughing about the title, <i>Flyin Pixies</i>. Why would I name it that, you may ask. Well, I created the name out of a gold, stick on alphabet and there were only certain letters left. In fact, I had to make the L with an upside 7 and I made one of the I's out of an exclamation point. Yes, !<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_8L5ElNlChQ/U1wejZqNOxI/AAAAAAAACKQ/brlXm-QJ3c4/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_8L5ElNlChQ/U1wejZqNOxI/AAAAAAAACKQ/brlXm-QJ3c4/s1600/Slide2.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I made the book by taking apart my mom's old date book. I covered the dates and writing with whiteout (that whiteout is a wonder, I tell you) and I literally cut the book's binding off. Then, I stitched the book back up with thread. Even then, sewing! hahaha<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K4KBDS7anpg/U1wejaoO_sI/AAAAAAAACKM/iRtvRkHLW5c/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K4KBDS7anpg/U1wejaoO_sI/AAAAAAAACKM/iRtvRkHLW5c/s1600/Slide3.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Well, last week I was rummaging through a pile in the corner of the living room and voila, there it was, in all its adolescent glory! The little pieces of paper that I used to write notes on were still in the book too. You see, I used this book as a guide for writing my great American novel. I had lots of characters and used this book to keep track of how they changed over the years. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3803FXkaUbc/U1wem9CX4NI/AAAAAAAACKo/TRw6oDeGAdQ/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3803FXkaUbc/U1wem9CX4NI/AAAAAAAACKo/TRw6oDeGAdQ/s1600/Slide5.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-d_9konfd4-s/U1wenV-3NiI/AAAAAAAACKs/lOxRSHg7zb4/s1600/Slide6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-d_9konfd4-s/U1wenV-3NiI/AAAAAAAACKs/lOxRSHg7zb4/s1600/Slide6.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RchbbrYc4Fw/U1wek1sbChI/AAAAAAAACKc/04hP_qXHAjI/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RchbbrYc4Fw/U1wek1sbChI/AAAAAAAACKc/04hP_qXHAjI/s1600/Slide4.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It was pretty much intact except for some stickers I put on the front that had fallen off. Well, I was thinking what an innocent time that was, and I decided I was going to make an Etsy shop called Flying Pixies (gee, I hope someone hasn't already taken that name). I want this shop to be lacy, button-y, cutesy, very home made pouches and purses. I thought it would be perfect to have it open for Mother's Day with hearts and such. I made the heart below for the new store (made with vintage floral fabric, by the way).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IxQjeALqPio/U1wg_Pa0YRI/AAAAAAAACK0/7TqE4q73CvQ/s1600/Heart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IxQjeALqPio/U1wg_Pa0YRI/AAAAAAAACK0/7TqE4q73CvQ/s1600/Heart.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I'll let you know when I get the store in place!<br />

I think metallic and micro-suede fabrics add that little extra to fabrics such as <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/FauxFurFrenzy?ref=l2-shopheader-name" target="_blank">furs </a>(not to mention the cool animal and snake prints)....and here's what I have in my stash:<br />

Women who sewed many years ago seemed to use their sewing boxes for mementos as well as the common sewing tools. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-84kkNRXRalw/Uumg7FaLyUI/AAAAAAAAB7I/s61MPe9r_k0/s1600/Slide6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-84kkNRXRalw/Uumg7FaLyUI/AAAAAAAAB7I/s61MPe9r_k0/s1600/Slide6.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've found letters, photos of children taken in elementary school and pipes among the needles, safety pins, and thread. <br />
<br />
Here's some of my favorite finds thus far:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-opPO7uQ3zJc/Uumg1AL8TWI/AAAAAAAAB58/kket7a67ZaQ/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-opPO7uQ3zJc/Uumg1AL8TWI/AAAAAAAAB58/kket7a67ZaQ/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
This is my favorite little box--I bought it at a garage sale, cleaned it and put oil on it. Voila, instant treasure holder!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9J3gAr_2aYw/Uumg5Lw_KZI/AAAAAAAAB6s/QxLcCBrl6xU/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9J3gAr_2aYw/Uumg5Lw_KZI/AAAAAAAAB6s/QxLcCBrl6xU/s1600/Slide3.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a cool contraption, its a clear wheel placed on an orange wheel with grooves. You stick your needles in a whole in the clear wheel part. When you move the clear wheel, the hole opens up above grooves with the needles in it and then you can pour the needles out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_QrzsU5QH3w/Uumg4JpAylI/AAAAAAAAB6k/vmMxwhfOqos/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_QrzsU5QH3w/Uumg4JpAylI/AAAAAAAAB6k/vmMxwhfOqos/s1600/Slide2.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I've seen this needle threader a couple of times--maybe it was pretty popular at one time. Can't say I've ever used it, but I think it looks so cool!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jduN_Ttt1dI/Uumg5go-DZI/AAAAAAAAB60/3ieWQuCQvh8/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jduN_Ttt1dI/Uumg5go-DZI/AAAAAAAAB60/3ieWQuCQvh8/s1600/Slide4.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
This is a gold name plate I found (I blacked out the last name). Where would this tag have been put on, I wonder?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SV5JvTXpdoo/Uumg6JmxUAI/AAAAAAAAB64/VT_6eX2IzFI/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SV5JvTXpdoo/Uumg6JmxUAI/AAAAAAAAB64/VT_6eX2IzFI/s1600/Slide5.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Take a gander at the large, sturdy screwdrivers of yesteryear with what we get for sewing machines now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NKKey-Uo5q0/Uumg70GkFaI/AAAAAAAAB7M/_bpH0ozYzIU/s1600/Slide7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NKKey-Uo5q0/Uumg70GkFaI/AAAAAAAAB7M/_bpH0ozYzIU/s1600/Slide7.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Cell phone earrings--they're cute but the phone is from the 90's!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IRaceVXqTD8/Uumg8PTKxMI/AAAAAAAAB7Q/PtK3k4JnDdY/s1600/Slide8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IRaceVXqTD8/Uumg8PTKxMI/AAAAAAAAB7Q/PtK3k4JnDdY/s1600/Slide8.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This point is used to make holes in fabric so you can put in a snap, etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KEFEqtLhhA4/Uumg9Dl1NkI/AAAAAAAAB7Y/HV7yWEOj0cg/s1600/Slide9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KEFEqtLhhA4/Uumg9Dl1NkI/AAAAAAAAB7Y/HV7yWEOj0cg/s1600/Slide9.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
This is what I'm talking about--how cool that this was in the sewing basket!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Rh1CjrzrGs/Uumg02ILbuI/AAAAAAAAB6A/iLUPb0qHF40/s1600/Slide10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Rh1CjrzrGs/Uumg02ILbuI/AAAAAAAAB6A/iLUPb0qHF40/s1600/Slide10.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
These needle threaders seem to be fairly common too although I've never used them. If I can't see the hole in the needle, I just put on my cheaters!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rb1K0Mi2w3U/Uumg00j_TAI/AAAAAAAAB6E/jf3GEDw4N0I/s1600/Slide11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rb1K0Mi2w3U/Uumg00j_TAI/AAAAAAAAB6E/jf3GEDw4N0I/s1600/Slide11.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I think this is such a cool tube, but I'm missing the top. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_wmvDcMS8-k/Uumg2PzvhrI/AAAAAAAAB6Q/RJmPO0P7iSQ/s1600/Slide12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_wmvDcMS8-k/Uumg2PzvhrI/AAAAAAAAB6Q/RJmPO0P7iSQ/s1600/Slide12.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I don't recall my Mom collecting these blue chip stamps, I remember the S&H green stamps.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kTvOUf4frF0/Uumg3DlJEpI/AAAAAAAAB6c/xVZ5GEDh4TY/s1600/Slide13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kTvOUf4frF0/Uumg3DlJEpI/AAAAAAAAB6c/xVZ5GEDh4TY/s1600/Slide13.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The little patches had bits of thread on them which leads me to think they were cut off some clothes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MNkOnUSKtys/Uumpri7jOLI/AAAAAAAAB7s/q9ygzl3uKYo/s1600/Measuring+Tape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MNkOnUSKtys/Uumpri7jOLI/AAAAAAAAB7s/q9ygzl3uKYo/s1600/Measuring+Tape.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Old measuring tape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DbtA1PMQzd4/UumprseLxPI/AAAAAAAAB7w/0nmWtCqYCaA/s1600/Pipe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DbtA1PMQzd4/UumprseLxPI/AAAAAAAAB7w/0nmWtCqYCaA/s1600/Pipe.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
I think the wood on this broken pipe is so pretty.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NYGZfQATu9c/UumqwIzuHvI/AAAAAAAAB78/8iSE2uyFKj0/s1600/box.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NYGZfQATu9c/UumqwIzuHvI/AAAAAAAAB78/8iSE2uyFKj0/s1600/box.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VoBPEf6T7hc/UumprvNyD9I/AAAAAAAAB70/Dzx9O6PUAfY/s1600/Sewing+Tape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VoBPEf6T7hc/UumprvNyD9I/AAAAAAAAB70/Dzx9O6PUAfY/s1600/Sewing+Tape.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the coolest find of all. I found this really old measuring take in this cooler mini cigar box. Cute!!!<br />

Going through a sewing box is such an emotional, lovely experience for me. What were these woman experiencing 40 years ago with their families? Makes you wonder.Carol "Joy" Simpsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16491197410537278408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532340176735639721.post-39211370552465420312014-01-28T06:18:00.002-08:002014-01-28T06:19:35.544-08:00Button, Button, Who's got the Button?I recently became the proud owner of about 2 pounds of buttons from a lovely lady who is moving out of the area.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BjslzrafqpU/Uue2MpGjRAI/AAAAAAAAB4E/c8zFpgu7nC8/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BjslzrafqpU/Uue2MpGjRAI/AAAAAAAAB4E/c8zFpgu7nC8/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
Sorting buttons is one of my favorite pastimes (besides going fabric shopping). <br />
<br />
I first form a pile for the unusual shaped and textured buttons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hzFcpaXrW3M/Uue2NwpmaXI/AAAAAAAAB4Y/TNZq6Fao5Uc/s1600/Slide12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hzFcpaXrW3M/Uue2NwpmaXI/AAAAAAAAB4Y/TNZq6Fao5Uc/s1600/Slide12.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I make a pile of metal buttons too. Aren't these cool? Look at the one with the horse in the upper right hand corner. And I love the military buttons too (lower left)--just think of who wore that button!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-unMsmRQjEMo/Uue2Pw9ckDI/AAAAAAAAB4k/0eAueT-BIyM/s1600/Slide13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-unMsmRQjEMo/Uue2Pw9ckDI/AAAAAAAAB4k/0eAueT-BIyM/s1600/Slide13.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Look at this one--it reminds me of a nuclear physics logo. Wonder if that one is vintage?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4ipbg9Qreew/Uue2XNBcF-I/AAAAAAAAB5k/qy3eblvj3PA/s1600/Slide8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4ipbg9Qreew/Uue2XNBcF-I/AAAAAAAAB5k/qy3eblvj3PA/s1600/Slide8.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
I also look for antique-y buttons, although I'm no expert. Look at these worn buttons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-re5CmyjNoEM/Uue2L4mfNTI/AAAAAAAAB4M/rqBlyTcaLMk/s1600/Slide10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-re5CmyjNoEM/Uue2L4mfNTI/AAAAAAAAB4M/rqBlyTcaLMk/s1600/Slide10.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-btBBGlgj3Y4/Uue2QH_UOpI/AAAAAAAAB4o/uXEAp67Dipk/s1600/Slide14.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-btBBGlgj3Y4/Uue2QH_UOpI/AAAAAAAAB4o/uXEAp67Dipk/s1600/Slide14.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sometimes it's the worn, unattractive buttons that are the most valuable (ever watched Antiques Roadshow?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also look for buttons made from shell. See the flower button below? That's made of plastic and it's easily identified because of its light weight and flat color.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W3c1Q62OORY/Uue2Vj3lmfI/AAAAAAAAB5U/2bpaOj4_XR8/s1600/Slide6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W3c1Q62OORY/Uue2Vj3lmfI/AAAAAAAAB5U/2bpaOj4_XR8/s1600/Slide6.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A shell button, on the other hand (see right above) is going to have more weight to it, have a complex sheen, and it will sound click-y when placed on a surface. A plastic button will sound flat. Shell buttons will feel nicer in your hand and will feel cooler to the touch than a plastic button too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I look for button groups like this too for potential outfits I can make. Sometimes if I'm really in love with a button, I'll build an outfit around them. These below reminds me of a cool, retro suit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_1uYfDDrCg/Uue2Uh9T_xI/AAAAAAAAB5I/JXwzIOi8w4g/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_1uYfDDrCg/Uue2Uh9T_xI/AAAAAAAAB5I/JXwzIOi8w4g/s1600/Slide5.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a purse I made and the button was the important, crowning touch. I think it really gave the purse character.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/68797417?"><img height="640" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/000/0/5663000/il_fullxfull.316846902.jpg?ref=l2" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="533" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/68797417?">Khaki Flowers Purse</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X_9826POo9s/Uue2TE3c7oI/AAAAAAAAB44/nEz-dQ3Ndjc/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X_9826POo9s/Uue2TE3c7oI/AAAAAAAAB44/nEz-dQ3Ndjc/s1600/Slide3.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love this nautical button, and I am compiling a group of fabrics based on a nautical theme--this will go in that pile.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last--this is my favorite button because it reminds me of Las Vegas Glam. This goes in my special pile!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9W6gQgoJuS4/Uue2UW5BXkI/AAAAAAAAB5E/yUNHyjxxg1c/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9W6gQgoJuS4/Uue2UW5BXkI/AAAAAAAAB5E/yUNHyjxxg1c/s1600/Slide4.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you like to collect buttons? What do you look for?</div>

I love that people have given themselves permission to be as creative as they want (I wonder how Batman proposed to Wonder Woman?)

I really like alternatives to white wedding dresses too, like this red, white and black dress on <a href="http://keeppy.com/keeppies/ab53b51008def0b8">Keeppy.com</a>. <br />

I've heard of a couple throwing a reception party--without the wedding. Hmmmm.<br />

A project you were so proud of, you kept looking at it again and again, because it was so beautiful? Well, I almost broke my arm patting myself on the back, but I couldn't help it.<br />

<br />
I absolutely love this color combination, I love the contrasting fabrics, fur, shiny sequins, sturdy broadcloth cotton...and take a look at the snake charm hanging from the large purse.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Isn't it lovely? And the crowing touch is that the red snakes eyes match the ruby red fur!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/175935510/ruby-red-fur-and-sequins-cheetah-faux?ref=shop_home_feat_1"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-unLT8c5aa9U/UtdGoKG_odI/AAAAAAAAB2I/W6_RCAIIswY/s1600/Slide12.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/175935510/ruby-red-fur-and-sequins-cheetah-faux?ref=shop_home_feat_1">Red Eyed Snake!</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And I tried a new thing too--I added the stripe of sequins--<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lkdloLBjGhM/UtdHA0V4h9I/AAAAAAAAB2Q/ULjLXawAxtk/s1600/Slide10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lkdloLBjGhM/UtdHA0V4h9I/AAAAAAAAB2Q/ULjLXawAxtk/s1600/Slide10.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
The sequins took a lot of patience, time and stitches to get them secure but it was worth the trouble. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q9eJXYnOAtw/UtdHa8B1IBI/AAAAAAAAB2Y/hGx6B-3Cg7I/s1600/Slide19.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q9eJXYnOAtw/UtdHa8B1IBI/AAAAAAAAB2Y/hGx6B-3Cg7I/s1600/Slide19.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also took extra time to add padding to all the pouches so they're nice and thick. Doing so adds a little weight too, so they feel substantial when you hold them. Also, they are sturdier.<br />
<br />
I love when a project turns out like this!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/174244970/black-and-white-kitty-heart-clutch-or"><img alt=" Boots" border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-icvXDLAsnu8/UsNzCsMR9oI/AAAAAAAABzk/8Mwk9NJR4WE/s640/3+-+1CBD05C8-7260-11E3-95CE-9F48846903EA.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My Dad named her Boots and she just showed up at my family's doorstep one day. I come from a large family of six girls and one boy and all of us kids fell in love with that kitty. Except, she never went by the name of Boots, we just called her Kittycat or Kitty.<br />
<br />
She was a kitty with her own mind, that was for sure. She wanted to go cattin' around at night, and we'd better not stop her! I remember trying to make her sleep with me one night but she would have none of it. She ran onto the piano and pounced on the keys, making the loudest ruckus you can imagine. Out she went!<br />
<br />
She didn't like us kids to pick her up and cuddle with her either. Petting her was okay, but she needed to be on the ground, thank you very much!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
She went out of our lives as quietly as she entered. My brother said he saw her sauntering into the woods. We never saw her again. <br />
<br />
On this eve of 2014, I'm a little surprised at how emotional I still feel about Kitty. I love you Kittycat!Carol "Joy" Simpsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16491197410537278408noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532340176735639721.post-49473677130527158472013-12-24T16:50:00.002-08:002014-08-31T17:12:07.449-07:00Renaissance-Medieval BraidsMy inspiration for <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/gypsygirlfashions?section_id=14997333&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1" target="_blank">rattails</a> came to me unexpectedly. It all started when for some reason, I had a picture in my head of a women with ornate, braided hair, decorated with beads and jewels. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.bellasugar.com/Renaissance-Hairstyles-Women-18486456?image_nid=18486504" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt=" Renaissance Hairstyles For Women" src="http://media3.onsugar.com/files/2011/07/30/4/192/1922153/6055dea2db3f0379_Simonetta-Vespucci/i/Baroque-Before-Cool.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And then I came across extremely soft, fluffy brown and black yarns at the fabric store, I was so impressed with the softness, and the gold threads running through the brown yarn. <br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The curliness of the yarn reminded me of when I was a girl and braided my wet hair so that in the morning I had wavy hair to wear to school. So, I made these <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/gypsygirlfashions?section_id=14997333&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1" target="_blank">braided zipper pulls</a> and I love them!<br />

Part of the reason I think actress <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=andie+macdowell+free+photos&espv=210&es_sm=93&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=QWwKU4rHCsPsoAS-oIH4AQ&ved=0CEkQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=663" target="_blank">Andie MacDowell</a> is so wonderful, besides being a great actress and leading lady, is because I love her tresses! By the way, I couldn't find a photo, but check out the movie <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109831/">Four Weddings and Funeral.</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andie_MacDowell">Andie MacDowell</a> is so gorgeous with her flowing, curly hair and large beaded headband!<br />

The below hair style really reminds me of my rattail purse braids.<br />

I experimented for a while until I came up with just the right combination of yard threads and length that I wanted. And then I sewed different colored pearl strands, and beads and charms. I love how<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/gypsygirlfashions?section_id=14997333&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1" target="_blank"> these zipper pulls</a> came out. I used silver and gold tone swivel clasps--and they can be attached to large zippers or sides of purses with metal hoops. Or use your imagination!<br />
<br />
I mean <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/gypsygirlfashions?section_id=14997333&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1" target="_blank">rattails </a>in the kindest way--I like the messiness and randomness of the beads and "jewels". I also made some smaller rattails. <br />
<br />
<br />
